Plant

Description
Herba perennis glabra, rhizomate tuberoso, caule repente vel scandente, 30 cm alto. Foliis petiolo 10-25 cm longo, lamina pallide viride, papyracea, 10-15 cm Iata, oblique palmatilobata, basi profunde cordatis, lobulis basalibus saepe imbricatis, lobis triangularibus obscure lobulatis et paucidentatis. Florum MALE tepala 2, rosea, aequalia, 6-8 x 8-10 mm, staminibus 12-20 (30), filamentis longe liberis. Flore FEMALE ignoti. Capsula dessicata solum cognita, 3-alata alis 2 minoribus, 5 mm latis, altera rotundata, 15 mm lata. Perennial, glabrous tuberous plant with one or few creeping or climbing stems exceeding 30 cm in length. Brownish stems bearing some triangular, brown, opposite scales. Fine petiole leaves, 10-25 cm long; blade 10-15 cm long, very thin, papyraceous, pale green, asymmetrically palmate, 3-5 broadly triangular lobes, acuminate; base of lamina cordiform or with clearly overlapping lobules; margins somewhat lobed, marked with rare teeth; veins very visible (dry) on both sides, roussatres below, sometimes marked with white concretions. MALE flower has 2 subequal tepals, 6-8 x 6-10 mm, pink. Stamens 12-20 (up to 30), has long free nets. Unknown FEMALE flower. Capsule (seen only very dry and empty of seeds) 20-25 mm long, with 2 wings 5 mm wide approx. and a large very rounded wing of approx. 15-18 X 15 mm. a pedicel curve at the top. - Pl. 25, p. 1. This taxon, recognized as distinct by Humbert and named by him, was not described in the light of the uncertainties pointed out by Monique Keraudren-Aymonin in the absence of FEMALE flowers on the specimens. However, it is undeniably a distinct entity, resembling by its leaves Begonia cladocarpa Baker: but it is a capsule aptere. By the structure of this capsule, this taxon approaches Begonia lyallii A.DC, but it is distinguished by the port, leaves and male flowers.
