Plant

Description
Wiener illustrirte Garten-Zeitung, jahr. 15, (1890) Begonia Le Mahoutii. This novelty, which adorns our garden in Bougival for two years, writes Eug. Vallerand in the 'Jardin', leave us completely unaware whether it is a new species or a hybrid, the result of artificial insemination. But this does not detract from the value of this beautiful plant, since it is completely different from the rest of the Begonia species and will always be included in the collections. It is extraordinarily flowering, as its flowering begins in the month of June and lasts until the autumn frosts, quite independently of the weather. You can use this plant as you like to form groups or curbs, it will always produce a pretty effect. The plant forms solitary small stubby shrubs with numerous herbaceous, greenish and red washed stalks. The long-pointed, wavy, toothed, gleaming, bristly leaves are dark green on the top, light green, purple washed on the back with outstanding nerves. The bloom stalks are long and the inflorescenses develop above the foliage. The flowers are dull white, vividly pink on the outside, rather large, with rounded petals. Cultivation is a simple one, as this begonia can easily be multiplied by cuttings, which in February or March are cut by the plants, which have wintered at 8 to 12 degrees Celsius, and easily rooted in the propagation beds. Begonia Le Mahoutii, whose description we have given after the 'Jardin' recently, is, as the Journal now announces, identical to that of Mr John Sallier, successor to the Thibaut & Keeteler company, identical to that of W. Bull in the Begonia ‘Moonlight’, which name changed first to ‘Mounelaite’ and then to ‘Le Mahouti’.
