Description
Le Jardin. Paris :Librairie horticole du Jardin, 1887-1921. 1901: Page 344 & 360 http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/33784 Begonia tuberculous hybrid cristata bicolor. The hazards of actuality lead us to present today to our readers the Isgonias, belonging however to a category other than those figures here before. The genus Begonia ranks first, with a few in the field of plants which have been the object of the greatest improvements, thanks to its varied variability, and especially to the numerous crops and selections of which the various species have been the object. One of the most interesting achievements was that of M. Vallerand: B. t. h. cristata. thus named because of the proliferations in the form of creels which have developed on the median part of the petals and have given to the flower an original and decorative aspect at the same time. This character was fixed by successive selections and reproduced frankly by sowing. This brilliant achievement has just been increased by a new gain from Mr. Arthur Billard. M. Billard has succeeded, after numerous fertilizations, in obtaining flowers from the petals properly so called, and the protuberance in the form of a crease are of two distinct shades, which has made them name B. t. h. cristata bicolor. As may be observed on our colored board, the crest is of a shade darker than that of the petals: thus, for the pink flower the proliferation is pink dark, for the salmon flower the crest is coppery. This new breed seems very meritorious to us. This was also the opinion of the committee of the National Horticultural Society, which awarded a first-class premium to the types submitted to it. The amateurs the Begonias will certainly to this curious and charming flower form. ALBERT MAUMENE
