Plant

Description
Wiener illustrirte Garten-Zeitung, jahr. 18, 1893 B. fulgens: The tuberous begonias have recently reached such a degree of perfection that the varieties produced by artificial hybridization must necessarily excite astonishment and admiration. Single blooms in the colossal size of 12 to 15 cm. There are no longer any rarities in the diameter; there is a surprising variety in the colors and shape of the bloom, and there are striking differences in the habit as well. Notwithstanding all these advantages of the hybrids, the beauty of a new species, which was depicted in Heinemann's directories, captivates us. It is Begonia fulgens, which was introduced from Bolivia and which last year kept itself to be a very valuable plant for groups. The plant forms a low, compact bush with round folded leaves that are supported by short stems. From the center develop numerous, in the same tone as the flowers colored flower stalks in a height of 20 cm. above the arbor. The blooms are shiny carmin, 7 to 8 cm. and have the welcome feature to smell soft especially in the morning. On each flower stem, five to eight magnificent flowers gradually develop, in a number as the figure clearly shows.
