Description
Flore des serres et des Jardins v. 12 (1857) https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/88581 Begonia rosacea - This species has recently been discovered in Mr. Linden's travels in New Granada, between Rio Meta and Guaviare, a tributary of the Orenoque. It belongs to the same group as B. octopetala HER. and rubricaulis Hook. both from Peru, and on which Mr. Klotsch established his genus Huszia. The root is tuberous, emitting successively several peduncles of bright red, 50 to 50 centimeters. of height, subdividing once or twice, each division bearing 3 broad flowers, about 30 mm. and presenting in their appearance some analogy with those of certain potentillas. These flowers, at the instant when they blossom, are of a white of cream; after a few days, they are stained red and green, especially on the edges and externally. The length of the leaves, from the point of insertion of the petiole, is 7 cm, their longest dimension reaches 11 cm; the width is 10 cm. The length of the petiole varies from 7-10 cm. The leaves are dark green, with the base and the lower part of the red veins like petioles. The plant blooms during the summer and autumn. In consideration of the tuberous roots, this species should be deprived of water when vegetation begins to stop. As soon as the plant is desiccated, the tuber is checked to make sure that it is healthy, then it is returned to dry soil and protected from frost until spring; then it is replanted in light loam mixed with leaves. In the early days, especially, the watering must be given very moderately. - Putz.
