- Description
- Revue Horticole, Anne 1899 New Varieties of Begonia cristata: The collection of flowering plants of MM. Vallerand Brothers, the well-known horticulturists of Taverny and Bois-Colombes, was one of the attractions of the Tuileries exhibition which has just closed. In their batch of tuberous Begonias, many specimens with curious flowers have been admired for a sort of crest which occupies the middle of their petals. These are the tuberous Begonias erecta cristata, a relatively recent breed of creation, which was the subject of an article by our collaborator, M. S. Mottet, in 1896. The peculiarity of this breed has not been observed for the first time as a result of artificial fertilization. This petaloid expansion in contoured, fringe, undulating lamellae/petal epidermis, which simulates a crest, is nothing but an external deformation of the central veins of the petal. Under the influence of a generous, superabundant water/sap, M. Mottet rightly wrote, a sort of outward thrust has occurred at the very point of the bifurcations of the veins; additional veins were formed, pushing in front of it the parenchyma which then relaxed and expanded externally. We have announced the appearance of this monstrosity in 1895. Since that time, MM. Vallerand brothers have applied themselves to regularize and perfect it. It was then that the successive artificial fertilizations intervened to ensure their reproduction. At present, sowing gives a proportion of 55 to 60% of flowers with peaks, figures which do not always reach many novelties in the trade, however, these are considered sufficiently fixed. On the other hand, we can see from the color chart which we publish today, and which gives the last shades obtained, that the race of the Begonias erecta cristata includes varieties of colors as fresh as they are pretty. - H.
