Description
Die Gartenwelt, Jahr. 7, (1902-1903) B. Goliath & Mastodonte: Two beautiful begonias. Two of the best Lemoine semperflorens begonia hybrids are 'Goliath' and 'Mastadonte'. Easy propagation, vigorous growth, beautiful structure, willingness to bloom in summer and winter are characteristics that make these two begonias seem equally valuable as potted plants as well as group plants. I usually grow twice a year from cuttings (although they willingly grow at any season), in January in the sandpit of the propagation house, and in August in the semi-warm garbage box in sandy soil. The winter cuttings in the cool greenhouse with plenty of air and twice transplanted in good soil, give until May beautiful plants, which are planted on groups and provided with fertilizer, to freeze ever-blooming; the greatest heat of the sun to partial shade they tolerate quite well. I hibernate the August cuttings, as well as old plants taken from the groups, in a light house at 10-13 ° C, where they grow uninterrupted, and behind each leaf a flower spike appears. In group planting, these begonias should be given a good distance as they develop and branch vigorously. The shoots are almost finger-thick, the leaves light green, leathery, the umbels on stalks above the arbor carrying up to 20 flowers; the flowers are 5 cm in diameter. 'Goliath' is white with pink touch, 'Mastodonte' is vivid pink. I cultivate these two beauties already 4 years and although they are generally admired every year, I found them so far sparsely represented in public gardens in Austria and Germany, which I hereby recommend to all esteemed gentlemen colleagues to catch up, because these two begonias should not be missing in any garden, The picture below shows a flower bed planted with 'Mastodonte', the picture next page a single plant. - by Josef Krupka, Stadtgartner, Baden near Vienna.
